Corneal Disease

What is corneal disease?

Our specialists understand and treat corneal conditions that affect how you see the world.

The cornea defends your inner eye against debris dirt, germs, and ultraviolet light. When light enters into your eye, it’s bent by the cornea and helps you focus. When the cornea is affected by disease, infection, or injury. your vision may be compromised.

When you’re experiencing cornea troubles, you might experience pain, blurred vision, tearing, redness or sensitivity to light. Usually, the cornea can heal on its own after a minor infection. But sometimes, advanced problems like keratoconus, Fuchs endothelial dystrophy and dry eye syndrome call for additional consultation and treatment plans.

What are the different types of Corneal Disease?

There are many different types of corneal disease but the three main types are outlined below.

  • Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a progressive thinning and weakening of the cornea that occurs when the cornea thins and bulges outward, forming a rounded cone shape. This abnormal curvature changes the cornea’s ability to focus light, producing distortion (astigmatism) and blurred vision. At first, people can correct their vision with eyeglasses but eventually might need specially fitted contact lenses to reduce the distortion and provide better vision. Advanced Keratoconus may require a cornea transplant for visual rehabilitation.

  • Fuchs endothelial dystrophy

Fuchs endothelial dystrophy is a hereditary eye disease that affects the cornea and usually tends to show up later in life resulting in corneal swelling, sensitivity to light and blurry vision. When recommending treatment for your corneal condition, there are options available. We’ll customize the right treatment plan based on the results of your initial consultation and these treatment options.

Treatment Options

When treating your specific corneal disease, there are options available. The right treatment plan will be customized based on the results of your consultation and these treatment options.

  • Cornea Transplant Surgery

Sometimes, the only choice for improved vision is a corneal transplant surgery, particularly when there's irreversible swelling from Fuchs' Dystrophy or after cataract surgery. Alternatives like DMEK (Descemet's Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) and DSAEK (Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty) replace the back layers of the cornea and restore vision.

  • DSAEK

We often treat Fuch’s Dystrophy and reduce corneal swelling through DSAEK, a corneal transplant that replaces the diseased layer of the cornea with healthy, new cells.

  • Collagen Cross-Linking

Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) stops the progression of Keratoconus or Post-Lasik ectasia. Our expert team uses vitamin B2 eye drops and ultraviolet light to promote the growth of collagen cross-links within the cornea.

  • Intacs

Intacs Surgery can reduce nearsightedness and astigmatism especially in patients with Keratoconus, by flattening the cornea and inserting Intacs segments to improve quality of vision and facilitate better contact lens fitting.

  • Scleral, Hybrid, and Gas Permeable Lenses

For those suffering from poor vision due to irregularly-shaped corneas, such as those with Keratoconus, our in-office Specialty Contact Lens optometrist, Dr. Steven Sorkin, OD, FSLS, will design a treatment plan utilizing unique, customized contact lenses to ensure your best-corrected vision.
