LASIK can give you great results, and the recovery time can take up to about a few months. However, what happens when you get home from the surgery, and what do you need to know to make sure your eyes heal as well as possible?
To help you get a better idea of what you can expect when you’re recovering from LASIK, here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked LASIK recovery questions.
After LASIK surgery, your eyes will be sensitive to light, and your vision may be a little blurry. Because of this, you will need to have someone drive you home. Our team will provide you with special goggles to keep your eyes protected while sleeping for the first week. In order to protect your eyes from the sun and other bright lights, we recommend you keep a pair of sunglasses handy.
Once you’re home, you’ll want to take some time to rest your eyes. You may also feel some discomfort. However, you should avoid rubbing them, as this can dislodge the LASIK flap in your eye. Instead, use the special drops your surgeon gave you after your surgery. These will alleviate discomfort and help your eyes heal.
Above all, make sure you go to your post-op appointments with your eye doctor throughout the entire recovery to make sure your eyes are healing correctly.
Typically, patients will start to notice clearer vision as early as the morning after the procedure. However, as your eyesight improves, you may also notice things like glares or halos around bright lights. These symptoms are very common and should subside within a few days to a few weeks.
On top of that, it’s important to remember that you are still healing, even though your vision is getting better. With that said, you’ll want to make sure you’re taking precautions with certain activities in the months during your recovery, to make sure that your eyes are protected.
Patients should be able to go back to work and resume normal activities a few days after LASIK. You’ll also be able to watch TV and use your mobile device after a couple of days. However, make sure you’re paying attention to how your eyes are feeling when you’re in front of a screen. If they start to strain or feel dry, take a break to avoid any issues.
If you want to start working out after LASIK, you’ll need to wait about two to three days to resume lighter exercises such as lifting light weights, and wait about a week for swimming, outdoor sports, and other strenuous workouts.
It’s important that you take it easy and keep sweat out of your eyes when you restart your workout routine to avoid irritation. Also, make sure you’re wearing protective goggles with polycarbonate lenses to protect your eyes from flying objects and debris.
With advanced technologies and more precise techniques, your surgeon will work with you to determine what is the best procedure to give you the outcome fit to your lifestyle. There are a few who may still need reading glasses to see clearly, depending on their initial prescription but this is something that will be discussed before moving forward with surgery.
As we get older our eyes do continue to change. If you need a LASIK enhancement after your initial surgery, qualified patients can get the treatment they need at no cost at any one of our surgical centers to improve or maintain vision.
