LASIK Surgery in Essex County: What You Need to Know

November 19, 2020

LASIK surgery is one of the most commonly performed types of eye surgery today. If you’re thinking about getting LASIK surgery in Essex County there are a few factors to consider. Not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery and not all eye doctors perform LASIK surgery. However, with a little education you can find the best fit for you whether you live in East Essex County or West Essex County.

LASIK is an acronym for laser in-situ keratomileusis. This type of refractive surgery is used to correct numerous vision problems including:

  • Nearsightedness (Myopia)
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia)
  • Astigmatism

This type of eye surgery reshapes the cornea in order to improve eyesight and reduce dependence on glasses and/or contacts. For many in Essex County and across the nation, this freedom from dependence on glasses and contacts is a dream come true. However, as mentioned, LASIK surgery is not appropriate to correct all vision issues or for everyone with certain vision problems.

Good candidates for LASIK surgery include those individuals who are generally in good overall health, have healthy and ‘stable’ eyes, be at least 18 years of age, not be pregnant, and be experiencing moderate vision issues with nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

Who in Essex County Isn’t a Good LASIK Surgery Candidate?

  • Anyone under 18 years of age
  • Pregnant or nursing women
  • Individuals with an autoimmune disorder
  • Those with eye or eyelid injuries
  • People with eye diseases
  • Individuals with dry eyes (LASIK can potentially make this condition worse)
  • People with large pupils
  • Anyone with glaucoma or cataracts

Once you’ve determined you could be a good fit for LASIK eye surgery in Essex County, New Jersey, you’ll probably want to know what to expect. First, an initial appointment at the LASIK eye surgeon of your choice in Essex County will help to determine if you are eligible for this type of vision-correcting surgery. Your opthamologist will perform a comprehensive eye exam as well as talk to you about the pros and cons of LASIK surgery. The risks and potential complications should be discussed at this time as well.

What to Expect on Surgery Day

On the day of your surgery you should come to the office in Essex County for your surgery with someone else. On the day of your procedure, you will not be able to drive.

The first step is for your ophthalmologist in Essex County to place numbing drops into your eyes. Even though the procedure is painless, the drops are to help with the feeling of pressure in the eye during the surgery. During the actual surgery, the eyelids are held back using a lid speculum. Next, a thin flap is made in the cornea using a laser. Once folded back the underlying cornea is shown and an excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea.

When this is completed, the flap is folded back into place and the eye is left to heal naturally. This procedure generally takes about 30 minutes. Not a long time to get freedom from the dependence on glasses or contacts so many in Essex County want.

The recovery period from LASIK surgery is quite simple as well. During the short recovery period after surgery patients may experience a gritty feeling in the eyes, itching, or even burning sensations. This is totally normal but subsides quickly. Your ophthalmologist in Essex County will prescribe eye drops to promote the healing process and prevent infections.

About one week following surgery, you will have a follow up appointment with your doctor. At this time they will decide if you are cleared or if additional appointments are needed. Whether you live in West Essex County, East Essex County, or anywhere in between, finding a LASIK surgeon is the first step on the road to improving your eyesight without corrective devices like contacts or glasses.
