My vision for my career aligns very well with the OOMC Family philosophy. My hope is to dedicate myself to a community and become integrated into my patients’ lives to help improve their vision and health.
I initially became interested in ophthalmology during college when I helped to establish a pediatric cancer ward in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Prior to the establishment of the cancer ward in Addis, nearly all children in Ethiopia died from retinoblastoma, a highly curable eye cancer with proper treatment. During medical school, I discovered that I love working with my hands and find joy in fixing something quickly and tangibly through surgery. I believe that patients value their vision as much as anything in their lives, and I hope to help improve patients’ quality of life and develop a trusting lifelong relationship.
I perform cataract surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, blepharoplasties, as well as small eyelid procedures, intravitreal injections, and various laser treatments (YAG capsulotomy, selective laser trabeculoplasty, laser peripheral iridotomy).
I performed cataract surgery on a patient while she was admitted to the psychiatry ward for suicidal ideation. She attributed her depression and suicidality to her poor vision, which was due to cataracts in both eyes. After cataract surgery, her mood symptoms improved significantly, and she was able to be discharged home. We were gratified to be able to treat the whole person through an ophthalmologic procedure.
My favorite surgery is cataract surgery. It is a uniquely challenging microsurgery and requires profound technical precision. I find it satisfying to enter a state of deep concentration when I perform the surgery. Patients can often immediately see the improvement in vision the day after surgery. I am always gratified hearing how much brighter the world is for my patients after I remove their cataracts.
I run a non-profit organization, Hearth (hearthnyc.org), that helps deliver health, eye, and social services to individuals who are experiencing homelessness and living on the streets. I also love to play soccer, cook, paint, and hang out with my rescue dog Pip.
