Computer Use After LASIK

November 19, 2020

Many of us spend 40 hours a week in front of a computer screen just for our jobs alone, not to mention the countless hours we spend on the computer reading the news, paying our bills, and communicating with friends. What should your computer use after LASIK be when staring at a computer screen for a long period of time can cause dryness in our eyes because we aren’t blinking as often as we should. Normally, the average person blinks 18 times per minute, but while using the computer and other devices, we blink only about half that many times.

Some people who spend a great deal of their time working on their computers may be
apprehensive to undergo LASIK for fear of having issues using the computer afterward. It’s crucial to refrain from staring at any television, screen, computer, or smartphone for prolonged periods of time after surgery. Your doctor will advise you how long to refrain from using these devices, but typical LASIK recovery times last from a few days to a few weeks.

Artificial Tears May Be Provided After LASIK

For the first few weeks to a few months after LASIK, computer use may result in increased eye dryness. This can be treated with artificial tears that your doctor may have provided after the surgery. Be sure to follow the instructions and use frequently. As your healing progresses over the next six months, you should be using the eye drops less and less. However, there is no guarantee that you will ever completely stop using the eye drops. Dry eyes are a common side effect of LASIK and it’s important to keep your eyes moist, especially while using the computer.

Blink When Using a Computer After LASIK

It’s human nature to blink, but not to blink often. Post a note on your computer screen that reminds you to blink. This way you can be more mindful of your eyes and you won’t forget.

Practice the 20-20-20 Rule During Computer Use

Practice the 20-20-20 rule when using a computer or watching TV. For every 20 minutes you’re looking at the screen, look away from it and stare at a stationary object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This practice will reduce eye strain. Again, remember to blink regularly while practicing this exercise.

Let Your Eyes Rest

It’s also important to take breaks throughout the day to give your eyes some rest, and it’s essential to get enough sleep at night. Your eyes get a nice, long period of rest when you’re sleeping. During sleep, the eyes’ nutrients are replenished which is critical for healthy eyes.

The most important thing to remember for computer use after LASIK is to keep your eyes moist and blink often to prevent harmful dryness from developing. Remember to take regular breaks to keep your eyes from getting tired and straining. It’s not guaranteed that computer usage won’t affect your eyes after LASIK, but by utilizing these tips and working with your doctor, you should be able to reduce the risk of long-lasting damage.
