Meet Our Newest Associate: Shyam Patel, M.D.

February 18, 2021

The team at Corneal Associates of New Jersey is staffed by dedicated professionals who have been helping those throughout Essex County with all their eye care needs. We are please to announce the addition of another professional doctor to the team as we welcome Dr. Shyam Patel to the CANJ family.

Dr. Patel joined the Kremer team in January and works in our Fairfield, NJ office. As a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained Cataract, Cornea and Refractive surgeon, he specializes in cataract surgery, ocular surface and corneal disorders, corneal transplants, and laser vision correction surgery. His interest lies in the management of cataract and corneal diseases, such as keratoconus and infectious keratitis, laser vision correction (PRK and LASIK), full thickness keratoplasty, and endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK, DMEK).

Check out our sit-down interview with Dr. Patel below to learn more about him and what he can do for his patients.

What made you want to join the Corneal Associates team?

“This practice has had a long history of providing premium cornea and refractive eye care to patients, and it is one of only a few private practices in the country that offer this kind of specialized care. When I first visited the practice and talked with the staff and other physicians, I soon realized the practice was well respected in the New Jersey area with strong connections to other practices. The efficiency of the team, support from the optometrists and other corneal specialists, and the modern equipment all allow me the opportunity to focus my time and energy on patient care.”

Why did you decide to pursue a career in Ophthalmology?

“The great amount of impact that we can make in a quick amount of time with little or no rehabilitation is something I felt other fields could not offer. The first time I saw a cataract surgery performed in medical school was the time when I knew that I wanted to become an ophthalmologist.”

What advice do you have for patients considering LASIK or other vision correction procedures?

“Just like with any procedure, especially elective, I would always weigh the benefit versus the risk. LASIK and PRK have very low risk as long as proper preoperative examination and workup are performed. We have modern preoperative technology that checks both the front and back of the cornea, which is vital in assessing the risk of performing refractive surgery. In addition, we perform all laser LASIK with personalized treatments based on aberrations for each eye.  I would advise patients that they do their own research to see if a particular practice offers this kind of technology. I would also recommend that the entire process from preoperative to postoperative care be monitored by a cornea specialist, which is what happens at Corneal Associates of New Jersey.”

How do you think the industry has advanced since you started and where do you see it going in the future?

“The industry has advanced in so many ways, such as the development of DMEK, corneal collagen crosslinking, and topography-guided refractive surgery. I personally am most impressed by DMEK, as it is very efficient, can be combined with cataract surgery, and saves many patients from full thickness corneal transplantation.”

What do you like to do in your free time?

“I enjoy watching and playing sports, especially tennis, golf, and basketball. Additionally, I love running, reading, and travelling with my family and friends.”
