Diabetic Retinopathy

What is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Our comprehensive exams help to monitor and diagnosis diabetic related eye diseases.

When you have diabetes, your body has trouble storing and using sugar, resulting in changes in blood pressure, blood glucose levels and low energy levels overall. High glucose levels can damage the retina and cause diabetic retinopathy and Glaucoma. We’ll work with your Primary Care Physician to understand your diabetes treatment plan and then recommend a smart co-managed plan to help you see better.

  • Partners in your health.

We work with your primary care physician to monitor your eye health and to make sure you are receiving your annual required eye exams.

  • A plan that works for you.

Diabetic retinopathy symptoms may vary, so we’ll work together to determine what’s best from recommendations on how to prevent diabetic retinopathy to treatment options that are right for you.

Treatment Options

When treating your Diabetic Retinopathy, there are options available. The right treatment plan will be customized based on the results of your consultation and these treatment options.

  • Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR)

NPDR is a milder stage of diabetic retinopathy, where tiny blood vessels within the retina affect your vision. Treatment from highly specialized eye surgeons includes lasers, medications or surgery.

  • Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR)

A more advanced stage of diabetic retinopathy, where new blood vessels are too fragile to provide nourishment to the retina, potentially resulting in a retinal detachment. Treatment from highly specialized eye surgeons includes lasers, medications or surgery.

Sometimes, diabetes can lead to the rupture or hemorrhaging of blood vessels in the retina. If this occurs, we’ll refer you to a retina specialist.
