Meet Ludwick Eye Center’s Newest Ophthalmologist, Thanh Nguyen, M.D.

August 09, 2022

What made you want to join the OOMC Family?

I was struck by the camaraderie at the Ludwick Eye Center and the welcoming vibe that I got during my interview there. After 3 years of living in New York city, I’m excited to be moving back to the DMV area to be near my fiancé and my family.

Why did you decide to pursue a career as an Ophthalmologist?

My interest in ophthalmology started when I volunteered at the Lions Eye Club to provide vision screening to the underserved population of Norfolk, Virginia. I was struck by how grateful the patients were to regain their vision. From then on, I was continuously amazed by the depth of knowledge one must know for such a small, albeit vital, organ, and the complexity of care it entails.

I believe that vision is one of the most prized possession of the senses, and I look forward to provide excellent comprehensive ophthalmic care for our patients.

What procedures do you perform?

I perform cataract surgeries, pterygium excision and conjunctival autograft, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries. I also do laser procedures such as Yag Capsulotomy, Laser Peripheral Iridotomy, and Laser Trabeculoplasty

What are some of the most unique cases you have witnessed as an Ophthalmologist?

Surgically, one of the most unique cases I got to see is in a patient with allergic fungal rhinosinusitis with skull base and orbital erosions. This patient ended up with a combined surgical drainage procedure with Ear-Nose-Throat, Neurosurgery, and Ophthalmology service.

I have also seen bilateral corneal perforation from peripheral ulcerative keratitis in rheumatoid arthritis patient.

I am continually amazed by the advance in technology and the type of intraocular lens that we are able to offer patients.

What is your favorite type of surgery to perform?

I love cataract surgeries and look forward to bringing better vision to our patient population.

What do you like to do when you are not at the office?

I enjoy traveling and exploring different cultures through arts, music, and food. I love spending time with my family and two dogs and do outdoor activities, such as hiking, whitewater rafting, or playing tennis.
