The world’s most prestigious athletes may seem perfect, but not even they are immune to the struggles of poor vision.
Poor vision can decrease an athlete’s ability to perform at their best regardless of what sport they play. That’s why many famous athletes undergo LASIK vision correction surgery.
Here are a few listed below.
Philadelphia quarterback Cason Wentz has made a name for himself in Philadelphia sports history. In 2016, his rookie year, he started all 16 games and helped the team end the season with a 7-9 record. Plus, he threw a league record of 379 completions by a rookie.
In January 2017, Wentz underwent a PRK procedure at Kremer Eye Center. Like LASIK, it corrected his vision and no longer needs glasses or contacts to see clearly on the field.
With three NBA championship titles, two Olympic gold medals, and countless other awards and accolades, it’s hard to believe that LeBron James ever needed to improve his vision. But after realizing his vision wasn’t allowing him to reach his full potential, he opted for LASIK prior to the 2007–2008 season.
In the seasons following his LASIK procedure, he made 20% more of the shots he took, had more assists per game, and was scoring more points per game.
Tiki Barber’s 10-year career with the New York Giants as a running back was memorable to say the least, and part of that is thanks to his LASIK procedure. He decided to correct his vision in 2000, about midway through his NFL career, and it helped him gain a number of accomplishments and accolades including an NFC Championship title.
Two years after the surgery, Barber experienced his best season rushing more than 1,300 yards and scoring 11 rushing touchdowns. Plus, with better vision, he was able to perform well enough to become a part of the 10,000 Rushing Yards Club.
Former Olympic swimmer and native of Haverford, PA, Brendan Hansen got his LASIK procedure back in 2009 to help boost his visibility in the water after winning a gold medal with the U.S. team in the 4x100m medley relay at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games.
Three years later, Hansen competed in the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games. With his improved eyesight, he was able to help the U.S. defend its gold medal in the 4x100m medley relay and win a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke.
Lindsey Vonn, another Olympic athlete, used to lose her contacts and have trouble seeing the gates when she skied down mountains, but not anymore thanks to LASIK.
Vonn underwent the vision correction procedure in 2010 a few months after the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. Since then, she has gone on to win her fourth Overall World Cup Title in 2012 as well as a bronze medal in in the super-G during the 2015 World Championships.
Tiger Woods, considered to be one of the greatest golfers of all time, has also corrected his vision through LASIK. After his surgery in 1999, he noted that the holes on the course were clearer, more defined, and overall easier to see.
The improvements in his vision helped him win a number of tournaments including the Disney Classic in 1999, as well as 12 Major Championships.
For these athletes, LASIK not only gave them better vision, it also helped them improve their performance and solidified their places in history as some of the world’s top athletes.
