Comparing LASIK and ICL Surgery

Do you want to set aside your glasses and see clearly without their help? LASIK or ICL surgery can help you reach those goals. Both are refractive surgeries that OOMC offers. Learn more about both surgical procedures below and contact OOMC to find out which may be right for you.

What’s the Difference Between LASIK and ICL Surgery?

While LASIK and ICL surgery are short eye procedures, they have different focuses within the eye.

A LASIK procedure creates a flap in your natural cornea and reshapes it to improve your vision using a laser. It takes about ten to fifteen minutes per eye, and you can go home the same day.

An ICL surgery corrects vision by implanting an artificial lens into the eye. This procedure takes a little bit longer than LASIK—about twenty to thirty minutes per eye—and also allows you to return home the same day. The implanted lens remains in the eye for life, although it can be removed if a patient develops cataracts as they age.

What Makes Someone a Good Candidate for LASIK or ICL Surgery?

ICL surgery is suitable for many people between the ages of 21 and 45 with nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism. You must have a stable prescription that hasn’t changed for at least one year and have good eye health.

LASIK candidates are those with nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism who are 18 years old or older and have had little to no changes in their eyesight in the last two years. You must be in good eye health in order to be a candidate as well.

If you have thin corneas, LASIK may not be right for you. Instead, ICL surgery or another refractive procedure may help you reduce your dependence on classes. An eye consultation with an eye surgeon at OOMC can determine what refractive procedure is right for you.

Benefits of LASIK and ICL Surgery

LASIK and ICL surgery have several benefits, including clearer vision with less reliance on glasses. Recovery time for both surgeries is short. After a LASIK procedure, you can return to normal activities the day after. If you’ve undergone ICL surgery, you may need a few days before returning to normal activities.

ICL surgery comes with the benefit of UV protection for your eyes. The implanted lens adds to and protects your eye. Your night vision will remain great post-surgery as well. No corneal tissue is removed during the procedure, so the biocompatible lens works harmoniously with the rest of your eye.

LASIK has high satisfaction rates and is among the most popular vision correction procedures. When completed at an OOMC facility, eye surgeons can offer a more personalized approach based on your eye’s specific visual pathway. That’s because we scan your eye to make a 3D blueprint and guide our corrections based on this detailed view of your eye.
